Filmic insight into the exhibition and the two artists: Miriam Vlaming and Leo Leonhard.
Anyone familiar with the Kunsthaus Taunusstein will immediately understand the title: Inventing Space, the invention of space. This is exactly what the bright and spacious showrooms of the house are all about – concrete or imagined or unconscious spaces, pictorial spaces, visual spaces, spaces of experience and encounter.
On display is a double exhibition by two artists who have never met in person, yet who have much in common.
Miriam Vlaming, a young painter with an impressive exhibition history, occupies the lower level. She studied with distinction at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig under two renowned representatives of the New Leipzig School, Neo Rauch and Arno Rink, whose master student she was.
Vlaming is concerned with the essentials: nature and people, inside and outside, living spaces. She works predominantly with egg tempera, a traditional technique developed in antiquity and refined in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Vlaming paints figurative and abstract, multi-layered, mystical-looking pictures using colors she mixes herself.
Leo Leonhard, born in Leipzig in 1939 and died in Bickenbach near Darmstadt in 2011, was a freelance painter and graphic artist alongside his profession as a secondary school teacher and professor of drawing at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Almost forgotten today, his work encompasses drawing, graphics and, in some cases, large-format oil painting. In his figurative oil paintings, he pays homage to old masters such as Caravaggio, Mantegna and Tiepolo. But he also takes up current social or mythical themes. Space is often a creative element in his pictorial invention.
The two artists are united by the discovery and development of (pictorial) spaces in which they pose their riddles and invite viewers to visually “enter”.
The exhibition, realized in cooperation with the Rubrecht Contemporary Gallery, is made possible by the support of the “Freunde und Förderer des KUNSTHAUS TAUNUSSTEIN e.V.” and sponsored by the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain.
